Chronology

Helaine Blumenfeld’s voice has always come from within, with no allegiance to any particular style or movement. Her singular vision has brought us the ‘Genre Blumenfeld.’ She is widely recognised as one of the most significant sculptors of her generation. As an artist, Blumenfeld has sought to put into form the complexity, beauty, and mystery of the human spirit: “My hope is that my work might inspire people to overcome apathy and restore empathy, to revive the belief that there is a spiritual value that soars above the material.” For this reason she believes Messenger of the Spirit at Salisbury Cathedral [2013] and Tree of Life at Ely Cathedral [2018] to be her most important exhibitions because people coming into these environments have been open to spiritual experience.

Blumenfeld has created more than 90 large-scale sculptures for private and public clients. Her work has been shown in more than 70 exhibitions worldwide. Of these, particularly notable shows include a joint show with Henry Moore at Alex Rosenberg Gallery [New York 1985] and solo exhibitions at Bonino Gallery [New York 1976], Het Depot [The Netherlands 2007], The Town Hall [Oslo 2010], Helaine Blumenfeld in Pietrasanta [2011], Helaine Blumenfeld at Huygens Hofwijck [2019], and her most recent show, Looking Up! Helaine Blumenfeld at Canary Wharf [2020].

Blumenfeld served as Vice-President of the Royal Society of Sculptors [2004-2009]. She was the first woman to be awarded the prestigious ‘International Sculpture Prize: Pietrasanta and Versilia in the World.’ In 2011 Blumenfeld was awarded an honorary OBE for services to the arts.

Helaine Blumenfeld is represented by Hignell Gallery, London.
