The 2012 edition of the Fitzwilliam Museum Sculpture Promenade features three internationally acclaimed sculptors — Helaine Blumenfeld, Kan Yasuda, and Peter Randall-Page — who have worked in the renowned sculpture centre of Pietrasanta, Italy. Near the quarries of Carrara, it has been an attraction for sculptors since antiquity. All three artists have works in major collections throughout the world and have exhibited widely. The exhibition contrasts the different ways in which the sculptors deal with abstraction: Blumenfeld drawing inspiration from the human form and emotions; Peter Randall Page reflecting the power of organic form in his work, and Kan Yasuda exploring the many permutations of purely conceptual form in his monumental sculptures.

The sculptures are a prominent feature at this prime tourist attraction in the heart of Cambridge from March 2012 for 12 months. Visitors are invited to walk amongst the sculptures and interact with them. In Blumenfeld’s words, “I have been dedicated to seeing sculpture re-enter the lives of people – not only in the art galleries but on the streets, in parks, in front of public buildings, to take its place as part of a restoration of the Public Spirit. The museum’s public profile, the visibility of the chosen site and the exciting education programme revolving around the exhibition, will create a suitable platform from which these artworks can inspire, provoke, engage and, ultimately, reach visitors of all ages and backgrounds.”
